Conservation Status
Common
Chickens are descendants of the wild red junglefowl from Southeast Asia, domesticated over 8,000 years ago. While chickens are not strong fliers, they can fly short distances โ usually up to roosting perches or to escape predators. The longest recorded chicken flight was 13 seconds! Chickens can run up to 9 miles per hour when they're moving fast. Despite their domestic nature, chickens retain many of their wild instincts, including foraging, roosting up high, and the urge to run and explore. Active, energetic chickens are often healthier and happier than those that don't move around much.
