Hawkeye
Chicken ยท Hen
The observant hen who notices everything and acts as the flock's lookout.
About Me
Hello! I'm Hawkeye, and as my name suggests, I notice EVERYTHING. I'm the most observant hen in the flock โ nothing gets past me. New food in the feeder? I'm there first. Visitor approaching the coop? I'm watching. Hawk flying overhead? I'm the first to sound the alarm. My excellent eyesight makes me the flock's unofficial lookout. I'm not the loudest or the bossiest, but I'm definitely the most aware. I'm friendly with visitors, but I'll always be watching you with my sharp eyes. Don't take it personally โ it's just my nature!

Lifespan
5-8 years
Diet
Grain, seeds, insects, and vegetables
Conservation Status
Common
Chickens are descendants of the wild red junglefowl from Southeast Asia, domesticated over 8,000 years ago. Chickens have incredible eyesight โ they can see full color, including ultraviolet light that humans cannot see! Their eyes are on the sides of their heads, giving them almost 360-degree vision. Chickens use different alarm calls for different predators โ one call for a hawk flying overhead and a different call for a fox on the ground. This ability to distinguish between threats and communicate them to the flock is one of the most sophisticated communication systems in the animal kingdom.
