Gertie
Chicken ยท Hen
The mother hen of the flock who looks after everyone.
About Me
Well hello there, dear! I'm Gertie โ the mother hen of the flock. And I don't just mean that as a figure of speech. I have a natural mothering instinct that means I look after everyone โ the younger hens, the new arrivals, even the occasional chick that needs guidance. I'm warm, I'm patient, and I've been around long enough to know how things work around here. I'm not at the top of the pecking order like Queenie โ I'm more like the wise grandmother everyone comes to for comfort. I love gentle visitors who will sit with me for a while. Come say hi and I'll cluck you a story!

She's especially good with children because of her calm, mothering nature. Gentle pets on her back are welcome if a farm helper says it's okay.
Safety Tips
Gertie is extremely gentle and poses no risk. She's one of the calmest chickens in the flock. Please still be gentle โ don't chase or grab her. She's an older hen who deserves respect! Don't feed her without permission.

Some hens will 'adopt' chicks that aren't theirs โ they can't tell the difference once they've started mothering!
About the Hen
Native Country
Worldwide
Lifespan
5-8 years
Diet
Grain, seeds, insects, and vegetables
Conservation Status
Common
Chickens are descendants of the wild red junglefowl from Southeast Asia, domesticated over 8,000 years ago. Some hens have strong maternal instincts and will 'adopt' other chickens' chicks or even other species of baby animals! A mother hen communicates with her chicks through soft clucking sounds, and the chicks learn to recognize her voice before they even hatch. Hens will fiercely protect their babies from predators, using their own bodies to shield them from rain and cold. The maternal bond between a hen and her chicks is one of the strongest in the bird world.
